Christy began figure skating at the early age of 4. As a competitive figure skater, Christy was a USFSA Gold Medalist
in both Figures and Freestyle. She advanced as far as the US National Championships. Following her competitive career Christy
became a student at the University of California, Berkeley, when she began coaching figure skating part-time.
Upon
graduation in 1974, Christy found that her love of coaching continued to grow and she soon found herself coaching students
full-time. Since 1976 she has consistently had skaters competing in National competition both in the United States and Canada.
She met her soon to be husband Dr. Andrew Ness at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, which Christy attended with her first
Olympic competitor, Pauline Lee who represented the country of Taiwan. Christy and Andrew were married in 1989 and soon after
Christy decided to move to Edmonton, AB with her husband who had a growing medical practice in the area. Since then Christy
coached two other Olympians. The most famous being US National, World and Olympic champion Kristi Yamaguchi, and Canadian
National champion Susan Humphreys. A truly international coach, Christy has coached skaters from all over the world including
Canada, Italy, China, Taiwan, Switzerland, Finland, Spain, Mexico, Denmark and of course the USA.
In 1995, Christy
and Andrew returned to the SF Bay Area where Christy grew up, where they continue to live in the neighboring city of Layfayette,
CA. Since their return Christy served as Skating Director at the Oakland Ice Center where she continued to develop young champions
including recent US National medallist Bebe Liang. Christy is frequently sought out by skaters from all
over the world for her excellence in skating technique and knack for reading both a skater's psychological moods and their
physical conditioning. Moreover her keen ear for the perfect music and eye for the fashion, have also contributed to her continued
success in helping skaters create the perfect 'skating package'.
Following Kristi Yamaguchi's worldwind
1992 season when she won the triple crown, US Nationals, Olympics and World competition, Christy, a PSA Master Rated Coach,
was awarded "Coach of the Year". A few years later, as a result of her coaching successes, Christy was invited to
co-author the popular reference guide "Figure Skating for Dummies" with Kristi. In 2003, Christy and Andrew
achieved their greatest gift, the addition of a new baby girl. As Christy shifted into the new role as mom, she chose to retire
from full-time coaching but continues to consult with coaches and skaters as her time permits. Given this new role and her
love of figure skating, SKATINGPROS.com is the perfect vehicle for Christy to continue to reach out to skaters who are eager
to learn from her expertise.
